Kickin' It.

The cutest thing ever to happen throughout history occurred last Saturday.

It was PeeWee soccer. And Dizzy was all over it.

I know coming from me this means nothing, but he was kind of a natural. And no one is more surprised about that than me. We totally expected our clumsy kid to just goof his way though it. But he really got it. It was his first time out and he dribbled, passed, and didn't use his hands.

Here was our exchange that morning:
Getting Eli jazzed for his first soccer practice and game, we reviewed the basics:
Me: you can never touch the ball with yoooooour?
Eli: hands!
Me: follow theeeeee? (looking for ball)
Eli: rules! (I'll accept that)
Me: listen to yoooooour? (looking for coach)
Eli: HEART!
Love this kid.

Creek pee break for Amos.

Where did he learn that move??? Incidentally that little girl was the baller of our team. She kicked circles around every other kid on the field.

I don't know. But at least the game hadn't started yet.

Eli self-determined as goalie. He was put at middle back by his coach, but took the job of protecting the goal very seriously. So did the kid in white who was on the other team and got a little confused and came to help Eli protect our goal. Ooops.

Eli knew he was protecting the goal, even though nobody told him to do that. And he even prevented a goal by the other team. The only goal that was scored was when he had subbed out. Mama's proud.
Love the parents' celebration tunnel.

I know it's not supposed to matter, yada yada, but our team, the Mighty Giraffes, did reign victorious. Final score: Giraffes 2, Other Team 1.

In a total coincidence I got an order for a soccer themed cape for a little boy named Edward in England. When Eli saw it, he naturally assumed it was for him, and who could resist. Guess I gotta make another. (Shameless plug - if your Super Kid needs his or her very own custom cape themed around their own interests, you can find them in my etsy shop - right here!

Super Creativity Powers

There are some projects that are just plain fun from start to finish. This week I had one. What I absolutely loved about it was that I was asked to create based on the incredible imagination of a child. Here's part of what the order said:
"My son is really into super heros and villains, so with his birthday coming up I want to get a few capes for him. One is Monster Man (evil villain)-he has 3 eyes, sharp teeth, slime, and several arms-he should probably be green as that's my son's favorite color."
What a cool kid, right?!

I also worked up a Rocket Man cape for him and a Sweet Bunny cape for his little sis.
She's pretty cute if I do say so myself.

I hope I did justice to your fabulous imagination, Super Kid in New Jersey. Kudos to you and your Mama for nurturing that creative spirit. Well done!

Crossing the Border

Super Kid Capes are making their way into a 4th country. Actually, a 4th continent (I think). There are capes in the U.S., England, Australian, and now Mexico! These two are heading south to Super Liam and Super Emma in Pachuca Mexico.

Check out the map to the right and you can Follow That Cape and see where all the Happily Home Sewn Super Kids are. Fun fun!

Capery

Some cool cape orders have come in lately. I love it when people have ideas we can collaborate on and make something totally original.

An etsy order came in from a woman who's family is being super heroes for Halloween, so she talked with her kiddos about the super hero they each wanted to be.

Her son had the brilliant idea to choose his 3 faves - Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. Genius.
Ta Da! This kid's going to be unstoppable!

Her little girl wants to be Super Snow White.
LOVE IT!

A lovely friend requested a cape for a little girl whose Mama was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. What a wonderful way to help bolster this family in such a heavy, scary part of their journey.
I'm so honored to be asked to help brighten things up in this small way for this family I've never met.

Adults are Super Too.

A few months ago my wonderful friend Sunny B placed an order for my first ever adult super cape for her husband David. I had to keep it quiet because her hubby's birthday was not til now.

Now David is a bit of a poker shark...so I whipped up this little gem to help him feel super and maybe add a little luck to his game:I used my printable iron-on transfer paper for the joker (hint: reading the instructions on these helps a lot).
I *think* he feels pretty super.
Happy Birthday Super David! And Happy Anniversary!!!

Better Late Than Never

It was just a few days shy of a year ago, that Dizzle got super. He came out of his room one morning, threw his hands up in the air and did this:

It was clear. Gotta make this boy a cape.

And so I did.

Here is the first ever Happily Home Sewn Super Kid Cape, on my very first ever homemade Super Kid.

He loved it almost as much as he loved Harry. And Bubbles.
It looks so teeny! And he looks so cute and smooshy and little with all that toddler chub.

Well look at him now. For months, every time I open the fabric cabinet and he sees this fabric he says, "Is that van one for my cape?"

Yes it is Big-E. That van fabric just screams Super Eli. But so many projects got squeezed in front of it.

Sorry fella. But today's your day.
Pretty super.
I'm gonna miss that summer shag. He and I have a date for Floyd's Barbershop in the next week or so. School will be here in just a few weeks. And hopefully he can start a new year feeling super.

Capes Schmapes and Some Fair Warning

Poor Dizzle. That may be the first time I've said that on this blog. It's usually poor Boogie. But poor Dizzle. He has to model everything I sew. "Just stand here for one minute and let me take your picture. Here. Right here. Hold your head up. Smile. Here. One minute. Right here."

He's worn every. single. cape.

He's over it.

But today there's a new cape in town. It's the hooded poncho towel. And he won't take them off. I made three today. Eli was a big help. He totally claimed the first one.

That's fine. He's earned it.
And I let him pick the picture for the front.
Brown bear brown bear on periwinkle. A bold choice.

The green one belongs to some other child. But don't tell Eli.

I'll be listing some in the shop soon for $18, plus shipping.

Ok - now for some fair warning:
It's about those capes schmapes. I finally acknowledged they take me more time and attention to detail than I want to admit. I really try to find out what details would make the Super Kid feel the most super. And that takes time.

So, this week is the last week to get them for $16 (which you have to admit, is a steal). Starting Sunday, July 11, they will cost $22, plus shipping. I love making them and it makes me giddy to think of kiddos running around in them and feeling super. I think $22 is a reasonable price for a completely personalized custom item that makes kids feel so special.

So - if you have cape needs on your horizon, order by Saturday for the current price!

You can find them here. Hold still. Right here.

The Big 4 - 0! Not me, the capes.

This sweet little A monkey cape is for the giveaway winner from back when I was featured on You Don't Know blog. And it marks the 40th Super Kid cape made here at Happily Home Sewn.

It makes me feel pretty super that 40 kiddos are out there feeling super in my capes.

Just for fun, here are a few of my faves:

Super Ollie's construction cape!

Super Chandler's Space Cape. I like that classic super hero look.

Super Nolan's dino cape! This dino fabric never fails to deliver.

And Roland's Super get well cape. I love it for it's tinyness.

And here's how it all got started:

One day Eli woke up super. He came out of his room, threw his arms over his head and ran about the apartment hero style. So I whipped him up a super cape. He's soon to out grow it. And Boggie will need one soon too. Don't worry. I'm on it.

If you know someone super out there who needs to flaunt it, check out the etsy listing and we can talk about exactly what cape would make them feel their super-est.

Baby Capes Model

I just made my first tiny baby Super Kid cape for my friend Kirsin's nephew. He was hospitalized after his two week check up, which I can. not. imagine.

His super power is getting healthy!

Hang in there baby Roland and family!

In other news...doesn't Boogie make an excellent baby cape model?

Oh yeah. He's super.

Reunited and it feels so good

I only have time for a quick post today because Betty and I have been reunited after my long vacation and we want to devote our undivided attention to each other.

But check it out - I got featured on a fun blog and the posting includes a cape giveaway!

Also, I whipped up a special "Fly Away Bird" Super Cape to donate to the Help the Gulf Coast etsy shop. 100% of the purchase price for this cape will be split evenly between Oxfam and the National Audubon Society. And it ships on me! Win/win, eh?
That P is just to show where your Super Kid's initial will go. This baby's customized! Two are available here and one is available in my shop.

Everything in the Help the Gulf Coast etsy shop goes straight to oil spill relief! Go do something good and get something good!

Now...off to sew!
